Dell Vostro 1440 Review

The Dell Vostro 1440 is a value line 14” screen laptop offering that features an Intel Core i3 processor and budget friendly starting price tag of $399.  It’s the cheapest offering in the Vostro lineup right now, but the build quality and overall features are perfectly adequate for many small business users that just need a computer to get on the web, use Office productivity software and of course email.  The Vostro 1440 even comes ready for video chat thanks to the integrated web camera and microphone.  The design is far from stunning, using an all black finish, but it’s not ugly either and has some finishes I like that you can’t find on any other laptop.   The specific Vostro 1440 model under review was purchased for $440, using a 10% off coupon at the time of purchase, and came with the following specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i3-370M Processor (2.4GHz, Dual Core/4 Threads, 3MB L3 Cache)

  • Memory: 2GB, DDR3, 1333MHz, 1 DIMM (upgraded to 6GB of RAM for review)

  • Storage: 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

  • Screen: 14.0 inch LED Display (1366 x 768) with anti-glare

  • Battery: 6-Cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Think twice before using 'cash for laptops' sites

Selling your laptop at specialist 'cash for laptop' sites could net you less than a quarter of what you'd get by selling it yourself on eBay.

A Which? Computing investigation tested what the sites webuyanylaptop.co.uk, buymylaptop.co.uk, sellyourlaptops.co.uk, and laptoptrade-in.co.uk offered for a range of two-year-old laptops.

Which? found that while these laptop-buying sites may be user-friendly, they offered just a fraction of their value. The investigation also tested Asda's Tech Trade-in scheme, which in one instance offered almost six times less than eBay for the same laptop.

Laptops quickly depreciate in value

We also found that laptops quickly depreciate in value. For a 2009 13in MacBook, worth £1,125 in 2009, sellyourlaptops.co.uk only offered £67, despite eBay selling it for £350. Likewise, the Acer Aspite 8920G was worth £750 in 2009, but webuyanylaptop.co.uk offered just £87 (see table below).

Selling your laptop online - are you getting a good deal?

Buy My Laptop £100 £99 £86 £47 £202
Sell Your Laptops £82 £92 £74 £37 £67

Asda Tech Trade-in £75 £75 £75 £75 Not sold
EBay £215 £410 Not sold Not sold £410

Table notes

  1. eBay prices were the best prices on offer when we carried out our tests in November 2011.

Disposing of laptops

Our research discovered people's preference for giving away old laptops rather than selling them. Some 44% of people who buy a new laptop to replace an old model would give it to a friend, while 11% would recycle it.

Similarly, 43% who said they wouldn’t sell their laptop would rather give it to someone who can’t afford one. Charities like ComputerAid offer people the opportunity to donate old laptops and computers, which are then refurbished for use in education, health, agriculture and the not-for-profit sector in developing countries.

Remove your data before selling a laptop

Before giving away your laptop you must remove any private and valuable data yourself. ComputerAid told us it uses OnTrack Eraser, which it said has been approved by the UK secret services to wipe data.

Apple MacBook Pro 2011 (13-inch) review

While Apple's previous generation of laptops took full advantage of Intel's Core i5 and i7 chips in the 15- and 17-inch versions, we said in our last-gen MacBook Pro review it felt like it was falling behind its stablemates, stuck as it was with a Core 2 Duo processor.
It meant that although the larger machines lived up to their 'Pro' moniker, you had to wonder about the smallest model, especially looking at the power packed into the Alienware M11x thanks to Intel's new Core i-series processors.
However, now we have a new MacBook Pro 2011, and the 13-inch version has gone straight from the bottom of the class to the top when it comes to power, as you'll see during the remainder of our MacBook Pro review. You'll have seen the unbelievable speed of Intel's Sandy Bridge processors in our review, and Apple's been fastest off the mark getting them into its laptops.
Apple's claiming as much as double the speed in some tasks from these new CPUs, thanks not only to technologies such as Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost, but also the new single-chip design in the Sandy Bridge architecture.
MacBook pro 13-inch (2011)
Apple supplied us with the higher-powered Core i7 version of the MacBook Pro 13-inch, which is £1299, though there's also a £999 Core i5-powered version.
However, the brand new Core i5 and i7 chips aren't the only big news in the MacBook Pro of 2011. There are always plenty of Mac rumours just before a new release, and it was all about Intel's Light Peak tech this time round.

The leaks turned out to be accurate this time, and Apple confirmed the new high-speed I/O port (now renamed Thunderbolt). In the new MacBook Pro range, it's been merged with the mini-DisplayPort connection, creating a multipurpose I/O port capable of 10Gbps both ways.
There are a few other updates of note around the MacBook Pro 13-inch. Though its big brothers got shiny new AMD graphics cards, this model makes do with Intel's latest integrated graphics.
Consistently the subject of derisive snorts in the past, Intel's really upped its game in this area. The Intel HD 3000 graphics chip is now built into the processor, and should offer strong performance as well as solid battery life.

There's also the new FaceTime HD camera, which enables you to make 720p video calls to another Mac (or lower resolution to an iPhone 4 and iPod touch).
One area that hasn't been upgraded is the screen, which remains 1280 x 800, while there are still the usual Ethernet, FireWire 800 and USB ports, along with an SDXC card slot. The optical drive remains, too, as does the multi-touch trackpad.
