The new Airs, both in the 13-inch and 11-inch format, are incredibly thin and light, even for someone used to a very small notebook (like Sony Vaio SSD models) work. The all-metal construction keeps it from feeling too fragile, often a problem for ultra-thin systems. The shape is closer to the former Air, as we expected, lost, given the radical transformation of the iPhone 4 over its predecessors. The body tapers to the front, creating a visual illusion of being thin (though it still only 0.68 inches thick on the back). Interestingly, the 11-inch and 13-inch, both close to the same 0.11 inch.
The large keyboard and trackpad of Apple MacBook Air MC505LL/A (which is the same glass version on other MacBooks found) both work fine, although the function keys at the top are very small. The F5 is the only one lacking a functional alternative, on the other MacBooks, it is for the keyboard backlight. Typing was typically excellent, but we are so used to the backlit keys on other MacBooks, we missed it immediately.
Apple’s multitouch track pad size remains the best available control, thanks mainly to the software, the gestures can. The pad (to which is disabled by default and must be enabled in the Settings menu) at the top is hinged so that the entire pad button at the bottom, but we prefer traditional type is. Other laptop makers have added similar ClickPad then, and we hear the next generation of press ClickPad sense to work instead of an upper hinge, which should be an even better experience to make.
Noteworthy is the inclusion of the latest version of Apple’s iLife software. The iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand and applications including tons of useful and entertaining features, and are ideal for casual users (although professionals are likely to use Photoshop, Final Cut Stock and Logic or Pro Tools). The most notable additions are iPhoto slide shows, the place of images on an interactive map with GPS data and a series of amusing trailer for the movie in iMovie templates, complete with cans Hollywood-style scores.
It is not necessarily a software feature, but the system boots up extremely fast. Apple calls it Instant On, and although it’s not exactly instant, it boots very very fast – faster than even the iPad.
This is the first MacBook with a 16:9 display (13″ is still 16:10), and the same 1366 x 768 pixel native resolution than most laptops use 11 to 15 inches. The screen lacks the edge to edge glass on a black bezel found in other MacBooks, but the screen is surrounded by a thick silver bezel. Maybe it’s to save weight, but it’s really the only aesthetic bum note on the system. It seems a lot of extra homes are to the actual screen, and one can assume the additional space was needed to keep the keyboard from feeling tight.
A doubling of the USB ports on the original Air by a is limited to two a welcome gesture, but only the 13″ has an SD card slot (seriously, Apple: all 10-inch-$ 300 netbook has a SD card slot It’s not that hard). All the more disappointing, even missing the 13-inch version of a backlit keyboard. (You will need an aftermarket adapter for the mini-DisplayPort connector) special VGA or HDMI outputs are no-shows. Do not look for onboard Ethernet or built-in 3G wireless, either: also missing..
There is a legitimate concern for 64 GB Solid State Drive or 128GB hard-disk space may be insufficient for high-resolution photos and video. We rarely have to fill as much of a hard drive, but today’s laptop users are in fact used more to 500 GB of space on even the most basic.
The 11-inch air feels fast enough, closer to a full-size notebooks than than most dual-core 11-inch netbook premium. This makes sense since the Core 2 Duo /Nvidia 320M Combo is similar to what you find in the current $ 999 white MacBook (though this is a version of the ULV Core 2 Duo in this case). It is particularly interesting, so with the 11-inch Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T-68U118, which compare a low-voltage Intel Core i7 CPU for 899 $. The Acer was faster in our Photoshop and iTunes tests, but more slowly than the air in our multitasking test. Although not as fast as a non-ULV notebooks, the MacBook Air is about as good as you will find in this 11-inch arena.
There is some confusion about Apple’s use of older Intel Core 2 Duo line in both the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro, but the back-and-forth performance result compared with the ULV Core i7 Acer timeline shows that this is not a deal killer. The real reason for the Core 2 Duo is so Apple can also pretty decent Nvidia 320M graphics chip. If the MacBook Air uses an Intel Core i-series CPU, Intel’s integrated graphics would be used to boring, or a fully discrete Nvidia GPU (which is larger, requires energy and is more expensive).
Macs may have never been known slot machines, but a few new wrinkles that to change the perception. The Steam platform for online game distribution now has a Mac client (even if the selection quite thin) to work, and the OnLive streaming game service on Macs as well, and has the added value of you PC-only games on a Mac game.
In a cross-platform Call of Duty: Modern Warfare test on medium settings at 1366 x 768 pixels, the MacBook Air was running at 40.5 frames per second (thanks to the Nvidia 320M), while the Acer Aspire 1830T-TimelineX 68U118, the Only built-in Intel graphics, ran at 15.1 frames per second.
MacBooks have always for the long life of the battery is known, and the air in wide trend. The large, sealed battery of much of the system of internal space, and it ran for 4 hours and 23 minutes. This is very close to 5-hour estimates from Apple, although the lowest power consumption have netbooks and tablets like the iPad us more accustomed to a full working than ever before.
Service and support from Apple is always a dual-sword. Apple includes a one-year warranty on parts and labor, but only 90 days of telephone support. Upgrading to a three-year plan under AppleCare costs an additional $ 249 and is pretty much a must-buy if the proprietary nature of Apple products. Support is also a well-stocked online knowledge base, video tutorials and e-mail with customer service on the Internet or in person visits a store of Apple Genius Bars, which in our experience has always been pretty frustrated Free encounters.
